Subject:
Live metal parts projected from Edison screw caps
Key words:
- Protection against electric shock
- Live metal parts
- Standard test finger
Approved at the 49th CTL Plenary Meeting, in 2012
Question:
During the test of protection against electric shock for luminaires, in some cases a live metal part
projected from lamp cap E 27 can be accessible with the standard test finger. When the compliance of the
used lamp and the built-in lampholder were checked with the relevant requirements of IEC 60432-1
and IEC 60238, they were found as satisfied. But the live part accessibility within the luminaire was
caused by such a metal part projected from the lamp cap which is acceptable according to the sub clause
2.7.3 of IEC 60432-1. “On Edison screw caps any projection from the cap shell shall not project more
than 3 mm from the surface of the cap. See figure 1”. In this case there can easily come into existence a
cap and holder combination where the protection against electric shock cannot be maintained within the
luminaire.
Can this luminaire construction be accepted?
Decision:
Yes, the lampholder and the lamp shall comply with their gauges specified in IEC Publication 60061(for
further information, see 60061-4, Sheet 7007-20-1).
