Electrical connections
Key words:
- Mechanical stress
- Terminal block
- Earth connection
Approved at the 49th CTL Plenary Meeting, in 2012
Question:
Sometimes a terminal block for supply connection is directly fitted to a tag of luminaire housing (serving
as internal earth connection) without additional fixation of the terminal block. As the rigidity of this tag is
mostly sufficient, it seems that the fixation of the terminal block is adequate. However during supply
connection unacceptable mechanical stresses to this earth connection can occur. Even in the case where
the terminal block is additionally fixed by means of plastic clips, an unbending fixation of the terminal
block, in particular when serving the supply terminals, is not always guaranteed. Attention has to be paid
also to the question if a terminal block, fixed only to a tag of the luminaire housing, has to be regarded as
a loose terminal block.
Decision:
Fixation of a terminal block, to a tag of the luminaire housing is only allowed if this connection
guarantees sufficient reliability. Additional fixation may be required to prevent unacceptable mechanical
stresses to the internal earth connection during supply connection.
