Question:
Where equipment is fitted with surge protection devices, is it acceptable for the circuits
following the device to be a lower category than those preceding it?
Decision:
It is acceptable, for example, for a Category III equipment to have circuits at Category II
following such a device.
Explanation:
The action of these devices is to remove excessive voltage spikes from the circuit and
therefore, the Category of the circuit may be reduced accordingly. IEC 664 does have more
tests to allow this. 5 sec. “spike” will destroy surge protection
