Clause 4.3.21 requires that two levels of protection are required to prevent forced or reversed charge! l8 e1 V( n. j5 o4 v' r
or forced discharge if this would result in a hazard. Conventionally a combination of resistor, diode/ B1 F( g% O* g. I+ K
or ic has been considered suitable and is for the series current path. However, a new consideration3 w+ X1 Z* l( t
has been raised in respect of adjacent tracks, separated by no more than operational insulation, which,- R8 R# V& w$ @9 o% E5 Q* Y
under s/c conditions will bypass the protective series components and provide charging current for
' c$ W& ~9 _0 P$ ]7 |5 c& weither chargeable or non-rechargeable batteries. Does this mean that there is therefore a requirement0 r, g: S" r3 X$ W  a" C) l- N
for Reinforced separation?/ y; q( i; g. W# x
If that is the case, then the controlling factor is the clearance of 0.8mm in Table 5 (circuits not subject
+ J  a0 j; E8 x; Ito transient over voltage). This is based on the fact that creepage cannot be less than clearance and" u$ i; @: b8 j
creepage can be calculated to be, for example at +5V, 0.4mm (based on rounding up 0.12mm to/ \3 r+ N; Y, {6 u
0.2mm for Basic and doubling for reinforced.

Operational insulation is suitable taking into account 5.4.4 because there is no risk of electric shock.
