Question: How to handle LEDs used in luminaires due to possible harmful radiation.
* E' b x3 w" j. X7 `Decision: In principle apply the requirements given in IEC/EN 60825-1. However in order
0 {: l) |) `' \to avoid expensive measurements, the luminaires provided with LEDs should be
/ X3 ^, `' N2 o0 ?, y; Otreated in the following:
9 h# L6 Y2 |4 _$ [- If the light intensity is low, i.e. from a conventional LED for indication or signalling
- V) `6 \3 y5 F# [+ }purposes, the LED is most likely comparable with a laser of Class 1 according to3 U+ o V v5 d! y. n
IEC/EN 60825-1 and consequently there is no need measurements. During the0 \! d7 H2 P1 r. V: \" _$ L
judgement the covers, optics and similar, which can be removed by hand, shall be; `3 S: v( ]3 ^3 Y; e: i
removed. In the TRF it is indicated that the light intensity has been judged to comply5 e) Y7 A# y5 F& h! D" ]; z
with the limits given for Class 1 lasers in IEC/EN 60825-1 and no measurements are

6 I1 a4 K2 i2 y& C, [" Q9 w- In all other cases the luminaire manufacturer shall be asked to provide a declaration' Y! S; R2 V3 y3 ?6 Q, ^
based on relevant tests (e.g. from the LEDs manufacturer) showing that the radiation1 l5 O5 ~! f0 }7 w( _
from the LED module will not exceed the values given in IEC/EN 60825-1 for Class 1+ ^& i9 }; N" ]) ~& o/ [( E
or1M lasers with or without optics. In the TRF it is noted that judgements have been
; _% v3 M- u. C' Q! Q& s5 T( Mbased on a manufacturer declaration.% C! a b# s8 N' C
- If such a declaration cannot be provided or if we are insecure on how to judge, the
) e) T0 ?- P) Umeasurements given in IEC/EN 60825-1 shall be performed. In the TRF it is indicated5 U3 W* n I( m4 V2 E; U) L
that measurements have been performed. For luminaires containing light sources' F, b: Q3 A G; s
providing radiation according to Class 2 lasers, the luminaire shall be treated as a laser" |- v' b( r& x( q" E9 q
source according to IEC/EN 60825-1 and comply with the requirements given in that$ u9 y/ U |- o. A. o% q
standard.
