40.1 General

40.1.2 With reference to 40.1.1, during conditions of simulated cell or interconnect fracture, there shall be0 ^% I; o0 L% l4 X5 y7 x% i8 k& `
no ignition of the module or panel.

40.2.1 Similar modules or panels to be tested are to be connected in series to achieve an open-circuit- z  ?2 D2 G$ `- X
voltage across the fracture equal to that which is present during normal use of the modules or panels with
# E$ r! B1 ?* p8 b! ythe specified bypass diodes. The modules and panels are to be irradiated at 80 mW/cm2 or more at 20 –& e. t# e! e0 R2 N2 u6 g& h. S
30°C (68 – 86°F)., U# R" T/ q2 r* t) l+ ~
40.3 Method B
2 b# t$ L9 v: a8 H3 w0 Z40.3.1 A single module or panel is to be used with a separate power supply as described in 40.5.2$ G$ z3 n4 j2 m: ^
connected in series to provide the remainder of the source. The module or panel under test is to be
* f! \9 x: d1 t9 O8 |, {; [5 Jirradiated at 80 mW/cm2 or more at 20°C – 30°C (68°F – 86°F).3 N: H" h# x: C' n: d; [
40.4 Methods A and B( s0 F7 y3 n7 E8 X  g" Y
40.4.1 All bypass diodes, either included with the module or panel or described in the markings shall be
# N* N$ C* }$ a. jincluded in the test circuit.9 f$ h, q* \4 W$ D! G( P" G# k
40.5 Method C
9 y* V( d# R  F* L40.5.1 A single module or panel is to be used to provide the material for the ignition attempt. However,# A* N3 ^5 J9 H" b, n- {
all power in the arc is to be provided by an external power supply as described in 40.5.2 connected in# F/ ?1 _) v* V# A5 W$ B) C  u- `% V0 {
series with only passive portions of the module’s circuit. Cells are to be jumpered if necessary to involve
* f- m1 |8 v; r6 Sspecific portions of the module or panel insulation system.& t5 T! O3 d: \( l% F
40.5.2 With reference to 40.3.1 and 40.5.1 the power supply is to be a constant voltage supply with a
( X) }( X1 }8 eseries connected current-limiting resistor. The parameters of the total system are to be as follows:
$ |9 D3 E7 g& r7 {/ X/ g$ b, u. y2 M; ?a) Open-Circuit Voltage – The voltage that is across the fracture during normal use of the2 h- F9 f8 u! X/ r% U' d8 R' P& }
modules or panels with the specified bypass diodes.
  b. e) E% T, X5 a- O, |8 qb) Short-Circuit Current – Not less than 80 percent nor more than the rated module or panel" x6 O& |0 q1 \
short-circuit current, when the current-limiting resistor is adjusted so that the voltage across the
0 ?' T' m# C! |) `: @# r" cmodule or panel being tested is zero./ |* t# X- ]. c' {
40.6 All methods
. N; U" V8 i0 p7 L0 B! W3 `40.6.1 The system load is to be a short circuit., V4 v9 p( ~  t9 r
40.6.2 Any connection(s) within the module or panel may be broken (fractured). The breaks are to be! t& K$ U# y' b; M- W
chosen to achieve a worst case condition of maximum open-circuit voltage and/or maximum short-circuit
2 Y. `: _! `* W8 a0 q8 _0 jcurrent at one of the chosen break points.
& J! M% M" T$ j  y! L# i3 h' k& d) dException: Any electrical connection made with wire of circular cross section or flexible braided
9 L6 e/ f& r5 f0 a; econstruction that is mechanically secured to its connection points is not to be broken. Braided or stranded9 A( \' A5 |/ ?' s4 L
wire shall not have any process performed on it that reduces its flexibility. Solder coating of a portion of0 b7 W) J. y( S
the wire at the connection points is acceptable.! J1 ^4 p' Y' G; X. i) _, \. m
40.6.3 An arc is to be drawn across the breaks, with the arc across the material of the module or panel
+ X0 z2 y7 d0 S+ R3 Rthat it might contact during use of the module or panel. The arcing is to be continued for 15 min at each
$ a6 j" d/ ]# s7 Qlocation tested.
